You’ve worked on your SEO. You claimed your Google Business Profile. You built the website. Maybe you’ve even been cranking out blogs because somebody told you Google likes that sort of thing.
Great.
But we have a new question for you:
Can ChatGPT find your business?
Because people aren’t just Googling anymore. They’re asking ChatGPT, Google’s AI-powered search features, and other AI tools for recommendations.
They’re asking things like:
“What’s the best marketing agency for a small business?”
“Who’s a good plumber near me?”
“Where should I go for dinner in Sonoma?”
“What company should I hire to redesign my website?”
And instead of digging through pages of search results, they can get an answer almost immediately.
So if AI doesn’t know your business exists?
Houston, we have a marketing problem.
Welcome to the Age of AI Visibility
For years, digital marketing revolved around one big goal:
Get found on Google.
That still matters. SEO isn't packing its bags and heading into retirement. But search is changing.
ChatGPT can search the web and provide current answers with links to sources. Google is also incorporating AI-generated experiences directly into Search.
That means customers now have another way to discover—or completely miss—your business.
Enter AI visibility.
Simply put, AI visibility is how easily AI-powered platforms can find, understand, reference, and potentially recommend your brand when someone asks a relevant question.
You might also hear terms like:
GEO: Generative Engine Optimization
AEO: Answer Engine Optimization
AI SEO: Search optimization for AI-powered discovery
Different acronyms. Same basic idea.
When somebody asks AI for a business like yours, do you show up?
That's the part that matters.
Wait…ChatGPT Can Actually Find Businesses?
Yep.
ChatGPT Search can access information from the web and provide links to relevant sources. And that creates an entirely new discovery opportunity for businesses.
Imagine someone asks:
“What are some great boutique marketing agencies that specialize in branding and digital strategy?”
Your potential customer may not begin their journey on your website.
They might begin with AI. And if ChatGPT mentions three competitors while your business is sitting quietly in the corner?
Well… That's not exactly where we want you.
Does This Mean SEO Is Dead?
Oh, here we go again. Every few years somebody declares SEO dead.
Social media was going to kill it.
TikTok was going to kill it.
Voice search was going to kill it.
Now AI has apparently shown up carrying the shovel.
SEO isn't dead. It's evolving.
The fundamentals still matter:
Quality content.
A technically healthy website.
Clear information about your business.
Authority.
Links.
Reviews.
Local visibility.
A strong brand.
What’s changing is where that information can surface.
We're moving from optimizing solely for search engines toward building a digital presence that can be understood across search engines, AI platforms, social platforms, directories, review sites, and the wider web.
In other words:
Don't optimize for one algorithm. Build a brand the internet understands.
So How Does ChatGPT Decide Who Gets Mentioned?
There's no magical button labeled:
PUT MY BUSINESS IN CHATGPT.
We checked.
AI-powered search systems can use information from websites, search indexes, publishers, directories, reviews, and other sources available across the web.
Which means something important:
Your entire digital footprint matters.
Not just your homepage.
Not just your Google ranking.
And definitely not the 37 keywords someone stuffed into the footer of your website in 2019.
AI needs enough clear, credible information to understand things like:
Who you are
What you do
Where you do it
Who you serve
What you're known for
Whether other sources recognize your business
Whether your content is actually useful
That's why AI visibility isn't really a trick.
It's good digital marketing with a bigger playing field.
How Do You Make Your Business More Visible to AI?
Good news: you don't have to burn your entire marketing strategy to the ground and start over.
You do, however, need to get a few things right.
1. Make It Ridiculously Clear What You Do
Visit your homepage and pretend you've never heard of your company.
Within a few seconds, can you tell:
What does this company do?
Who do they help?
Where do they operate?
You'd be amazed how many websites make visitors solve a riddle before telling them what the business actually sells.
Don't make humans—or AI—play detective.
Creative copy is great.
Clear copy converts.
The sweet spot is having both.
2. Answer the Questions Your Customers Actually Ask
This is where your blog becomes more than something gathering digital dust.
Create content around real customer questions.
What does your service cost?
How does it work?
What should customers know before hiring someone?
What's the difference between two common options?
What mistakes should customers avoid?
How should someone choose a provider?
Those questions are incredibly valuable because they're also the kinds of conversational questions people ask AI. Stop blogging just because somebody told you to publish twice a month.
Create content worth finding.
3. Build Authority Beyond Your Own Website
You saying you're awesome is marketing. Someone else saying you're awesome?
That's reputation.
Reviews, media mentions, industry directories, partnerships, backlinks, guest articles, podcasts, associations, awards, case studies, and expert commentary can all strengthen the digital footprint surrounding your brand.
The goal isn't to be everywhere. It's to create enough credible signals across the web that your business becomes easier to understand and trust.
4. Keep Your Business Information Consistent
Your website says one thing.
Google says another.
Facebook has an old phone number.
Some directory you've forgotten exists still lists the address you moved out of six years ago.
Clean. It. Up.
Make sure important information about your business is accurate and consistent across the places where your brand appears online.
Especially:
Business name
Website
Contact information
Location
Service areas
Services
Business descriptions
Social profiles
Consistency helps customers.
It helps search engines.
And it gives AI systems fewer mixed signals about your business.
Everybody wins.
5. Don't Ignore the Nerdy Website Stuff
We love a gorgeous website.
But if search engines and AI crawlers can't properly access it, you've essentially built a beautiful billboard in somebody's basement.
Technical SEO still matters.
Your website should be crawlable, indexable, fast, mobile-friendly, logically structured, and easy to understand. Structured data can also help machines better interpret information about your organization and content. You don't have to become a schema-markup expert over your morning coffee.
That's what marketing nerds are for.
Hi. 👋
6. Give the Internet Something Worth Talking About
This may be the biggest one.
As AI makes it ridiculously easy to produce average content, average content becomes ridiculously easy to ignore.
Don't publish the same article 400 other businesses already published.
Bring something to the table.
Experience.
Opinions.
Case studies.
Original research.
Customer stories.
Expertise.
Useful resources.
Actual personality.
A point of view.
The businesses that stand out in an AI-heavy world won't necessarily be the ones producing the most content.
They'll be the ones producing content worth referencing.
Want to Know Whether ChatGPT Can Find You? Ask It.
Here's a quick experiment.
Open ChatGPT and search the way one of your potential customers might.
Don't search your company name. That's cheating.
Try something like:
“What are the best [your service] companies in [your city]?”
Or:
“Recommend a company that specializes in [your service].”
Or:
“Who should I hire for [problem your business solves]?”
Now look at the results.
Do you appear?
More importantly:
Do your competitors?
Look at which businesses are mentioned and what sources are being used.
This isn't a perfect AI visibility audit. AI results can vary based on the query, context, location, available information, and platform.
But it's a pretty darn good reality check. Because if your competitors are showing up in AI-generated recommendations and you're not? That's worth paying attention to.
The Real Opportunity Isn't “Ranking in ChatGPT”
Here's where we pump the brakes on the hype machine. The goal isn't to find some secret ChatGPT loophole and game your way into every AI answer.
That's short-term thinking.
The bigger opportunity is building a brand with such a strong, clear, useful digital presence that search engines, AI platforms, and—most importantly—people can understand why you're worth choosing.
That means good SEO.
Good content.
Good branding.
Good PR.
Good reputation.
Good website architecture.
Good customer experiences.
Funny how good marketing keeps coming back to…
good marketing.
AI Is Changing Search. Your Marketing Should Change With It.
We're still in the early days of AI-powered discovery.
The platforms will change.
The algorithms will change.
The acronyms will probably multiply until we're all completely sick of them.
But one thing is already clear:
The way people find businesses is changing.
Your customers aren't going to stop using Google tomorrow.
But they're also not going to stop asking AI for recommendations.
Businesses that start building their AI visibility now have an opportunity to get ahead while everyone else is still arguing about whether AI search is a fad.
Spoiler alert:
We wouldn't bet the marketing budget on that.
So…Can ChatGPT Find Your Business?
Maybe.
Maybe not.
But “I have no freaking idea” probably isn't the answer you want.
